ThankYou

(November 2013)

We, students from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law (TJSL) in San Diego, are raising funds to help in the disaster relief efforts in the Philippines.  We have direct communication with groups based in the University of the Philippines Visayas (UP Visayas), in Iloilo, Philippines.  These groups, Validus Amicitia (UP VA) and its Alumni Association, are now doing relief operations in the northern part of the Province of Iloilo, Island of Panay.  UP VA is also currently coordinating with two groups of volunteer doctors conducting medical missions in the Islands of Panay and Tacloban.  (UP VA is one of 11 relief organizations in the Philippines recognized by TransFast.com, a worldwide online money transfer service.)*

100% of donations will go directly to the purchase of relief goods, needed medicines and supplies for the communities that will be reached.  We will post pictures and updates of the groups' relief efforts in this website as well as a list and accounting of all donations (see blog link above).

(*Ian Seruelo, who is coordinating this effort with relief groups on the ground, is an alumnus of the UP Visayas and a member of the UP VA Alumni Association. He is currently a student at TJSL.)

Typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda) is the strongest recorded storm, equivalent to a category 4 hurricane here in the US. Hurricane Sandy, by comparison, was category 2 when it hit the east coast in 2012 and Katrina was a category 3 hurricane when it hit Louisiana. More than three thousand are now confirmed dead but it is feared that there could be more than 10,000 who perished as information about the number of casualties are still coming in and are being confirmed.  Close to half a million people lost their homes and food and clean water is scarce. This is a continuing disaster and the damage to life and property is just so devastating. (Click here to see some aerial photos of the extent of damage.)  We are calling on everyone to pitch in and help.
